Microsoft's Fluent Design Language enhances Windows 10 appearance

Windows Store To Support iTunes Soon

Microsoft's Cortana on a Windows 10 PC or Android, iOS or Windows smartphone will be able to recognize which files, websites or apps a person was most recently using and make them available across devices, so users can continue what they were doing after they swap for PC to smartphone and vice-versa.

Microsoft surprised everyone with a new Windows 10 Story Remix feature earlier today.

The feature requires Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant app, to run on each device. The latter is a function that Apple (AAPL) already offers users through a feature called "Universal Clipboard".

Microsoft also introduced a mixed-reality controller that will work with virtual-reality goggles being developed by hardware makers using the company's software.

A customer who pairs a Windows Mixed Reality headset with motion controllers will have a rich and immersive experience across creativity tools, productivity, games and entertainment, he added. There are other parallels, too. Due to wide interest from the community, developers in the US and Canada can pre-order an Acer ($299 USD) or HP ($329 USD) Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition starting today from the Microsoft Store for delivery later this summer. This will allow you to view and access all of your files in the cloud without having to download the files onto your iOS or Android device.

Windows will also start to look a little fresher. "We're not discussing that", said Windows Developer corporate Vice President Kevin Gallo. The update will come later this year.

Microsoft on Thursday unveiled a forthcoming Windows update aimed at keeping its desktop and laptop computers at the heart of lifestyles increasing reliant on smartphones.

Windows 10 grew by 24% since Microsoft ended the free upgrade offer previous year, but the staying power of Windows 7 - that edition still powered more than half of all Windows PCs in April - hinted that enterprises have yet to migrate to the newer OS in large numbers. Thursday, the company said more than 300 million people use the almost two-year-old operating system every day, and do so for more than 3.5 hours a day on average.

Apple iTunes will hit the Window Store by the end of the year.

Windows 10 users will be able to save, open, and edit projects across Windows, iOS, and Android devices after Microsoft Corp. implements the upcoming Fall Creators Update in September, the company announced Thursday.

This new, cloud-powered clipboard will also be directly integrated into Microsoft's suite of Office apps, which will make it easier for you to quickly grab content from your mobile device and place it into a document you're working on from your desktop.

What this means in practice is that Microsoft has made a decision to fall back on its biggest strength as a long-standing governor of your PC and intermediary in advanced productivity tasks.

The store, though, still lacks the Chrome browser from Alphabet's Google, for example.
