In other words, Instagram is making the case that its face filters are more realistic and life-like than Snapchat's selfie lenses. If you've used other augmented-reality lens apps like Snow you'll have already seen the dozens and dozens of different animal filters out there. The decorations include a gold crown and a pair of bunny ears reminiscent of Snapchat's offerings, as well as thick-rimmed glasses.

If you're more inclined to use video, there's now an option for Instagram users to use the face filters on Boomerang, too.

"Today, we're introducing face filters in the camera, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining", the company announced on its blog.

You can access them now by downloading the new Instagram 10.21 update from the App Store or Google Play Store. Record a video as you normally would and the playback will be in reverse. It allows users to use the tool to erase color or text they've added to their photo or video, but not erase what is in the photo to begin with like on Snapchat. Some of the filters - like Snapchat's - also work with a second person in the frame.

Over the past few months, Instagram has stolen all of Snapchat's major features, including Stories and ephemeral direct messaging.

If you're more focused on the hashtags, all you have to do is tap the sticker icon at the top right of your screen.

In addition, the photo-sharing app has introduced hashtag stickers, which enable users to add a hashtag to their story. It's placed next to the Boomerang and Hands-Free camera features.

With its effects platform, Facebook appears to be attempting to surpass Snapchat in terms of mask and filter quality. Previously, it was an "all-or-nothing" approach, but Stories lets you handpick who you share posts with, and importantly who you choose not to. Instagram Stories alone has more than 200 million. Awesome stuff! Instagram, it looks like you've done it again!
