Kisner survives Spieth charge for second win

"I'm honoured to be a champion here and to see my name on the wall here will be very special", said Kisner. On Friday he was in danger of missing an unprecedented third consecutive cut but he played the final 45 holes in 11-under. "And it was in my head". "It's hard to ask for much more than 65 on the last day".

Spieth, feeding on the partisan crowd and playing like he had nothing to lose, went out in 32 and was within a shot of Simpson's lead after a birdie on the par-4 10th hole.

For the 2012 U.S. Open champion, and pretty much everyone else at Hogan's Alley, it was a mentally draining day at the traditional tree-lined course where temperatures were in the upper 90s, with a heat index of 108 degrees and wind gusting to 25 miles per hour.

He triumphed by one stroke, with Spieth (65), Sean O'Hair (66) and Jon Rahm (66) finishing in a tie for second, a shot ahead of third-round leader Webb Simpson (71). The 23-year-old broke from his recent routine by seeking caddy Michael Greller's input on the 4-footer. Piercy managed six birdies - three in a row on Nos. "I stepped and walked it in". No one really walks those in. That included two birdies on the "Horrible Horseshoe" of holes 3-5.

Simpson, who won the 2012 U.S. Open but last tasted success on the PGA Tour at the 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, sits at nine under.

"I played 5 under on my last, what is that, my last 13, 14 holes - that's the round of the day", Spieth said.

"I feel like Hilton Head, I had a chance to win Sunday", Simpson said.

He had a bogey at the 16th before sinking a five-foot par-saving putt at the final hole.

Kisner's only PGA Tour victory came by an impressive six shots in 2015, but he has been knocking on the door with six runner-up finishes in his career, including the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Past year was the first time Simpson had played the event since 2010 and he had missed his two earlier cuts on the course. "I'm just either not catching the breaks or my short game is just a little off". That was the same hole where Spieth, playing two groups ahead of him, punctuated an 11-foot birdie putt with a fist pump. He added four more birdies on the front nine and parred his final four holes.

Singh used his power to move ahead of Langer at rain-softened Trump National in Sterling, Va., but Langer used his guile to stay close, setting up a duel for the title between the Hall of Famers.

"It's been tricky with the wind", Casey said. "I was just too far back starting the day". With this heat, I just flew I think five greens to the back pins. I hit a bad putt on 17. There were 33 under-par scores in the final round from the 72 players. "More greens in reg tomorrow, and let her go".
