Speaking at the dialogue, Asia's premier security forum, Mattis said the United States remained fully engaged with its partners.

In reference to Pyongyang's continued development of nuclear weapons and missiles, Mattis said in a speech at the annual Asia Security Summit that North Korea poses the "most urgent and risky threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific".

The spokesperson also said that the USA is "sadly mistaken" if it thinks that such missile interception system can prevent nuclear strikes by the Strategic Force of the KPA.

This picture released from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 28, 2017 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un (C-in white shirt) watching the test of a new anti-aircraft guided weapon system organized by the Academy of National Defense Science.

French Minister for Armed Forces Sylvie Goulard noted that North Korea is the only country to have conducted nuclear tests in the 21st century, including two previous year alone.

The analyst highlights the timing of Pyongyang's latest missile tests, saying those launches coincided with the joint military drills between the US and South Korea. The measure added new individuals and entities connected to Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear programs to the existing United Nations blacklist.

"We can not accept Chinese actions that impinge on the interests of the global community, undermining the rules-based order that has benefited all countries represented here today including, and especially, China", he told some 500 delegates at the Shangri-La Dialogue which focus on defence and security.

Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said it is encouraging that China has condemned recent actions by North Korea, but added that it has the power to do much more.

On Friday, the UNSC unanimously adopted Resolution 2356 to punish the North's series of ballistic missiles launches with strengthened sanctions.

In a sign of the U.S. commitment to the region, Mattis said that soon about 60 percent of overseas tactical aviation assets would be assigned to the region and he would work with the U.S. Congress on an Asia-Pacific stability initiative.

"If it continues on this unsafe path, we will have no other choice but to reinforce the pressure, again and again", Delattre said.

"Beyond diplomatic and financial consequences, the United States remains prepared to counteract North Korean aggression through other means, if necessary". It was the first time the system had been tested against a missile of intercontinental range. "He or she should also mention the three joint communiqu├ęs between China and the United States, thus giving a full picture of the issue".

Mattis said that North Korea poses an "urgent military threat".

"The reason for the tension on the peninsula is not just the nuclear missiles of Pyongyang but also the heightened military activity of some regional and especially out of the region states in Northeast Asia", Safronkov said. Moscow's support had been unclear after the United States imposed its own sanctions on Thursday on Russian firms for their support of North Korea's weapons programs.
