Labour leader Corbyn sees possible new UK election this year or next

Theresa May impact on Pound exchange rates

On Friday, May outlined a plan to prop up her administration with the help of the DUP, which won 10 seats in the House of Commons in Thursday's election.

Despite Northern Ireland voting Remain, the DUP were the only major party to campaign for Brexit, arguing that leaving the European Union would strengthen the United Kingdom.

Senior EU officials and politicians have said May can postpone the June 19 date if she needs to, but with a final deadline for exiting the EU in March 2019, precious negotiating time would be lost if delayed.

Johnson denied the reports as "tripe" and said: "I am backing Theresa May".

Gavin Barwell was named new chief of staff.

"The prime minister called the election because she wanted a mandate", Corbyn told The Guardian.

A separate YouGov poll for the Sunday Times found that Corbyn is now neck-and-neck with May on who the public believe would make the best prime minister.

Trump offered his warm support to May over the just- concluded parliamentary election, it said.

Will a "confidence and supply deal with the DUP be enough to keep May in power?"

Conservatives spoke out after a senior party figure was sent to Belfast seeking a deal that could have seen the DUP handed ministerial jobs, with one Tory telling The Independent it meant being "pushed out to the right".

Without a majority, she could be forced to seek consensus on the approach she takes, potentially by performing a U-turn on single market membership, protecting the economy at the expense of immigration controls.

"And then it is up to other parties if they want to support us".

May was deemed on track for an overall majority in the triple digits when she announced the elections on April 18.

"I would like to make clear that the freaky media reports about my own role in the policy's inclusion are wrong: it had been the subject of many months of work within Whitehall, and it was not my personal pet project".

May confirmed she meant to start the Brexit talks on June 19 as planned, promising to "get to work". She confirmed this to German leader Angela Merkel in a phone call on Saturday.

Pressed if he was being clear that the United Kingdom will leave the EU, Mr Corbyn said: "Absolutely".

"I'm sorry for all those candidates and hard working party workers who weren't successful", May said on Friday after a surprise resurgence by the main opposition Labour Party under its leftwing leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Survation, the opinion polling firm that came closest to predicting correctly the election's outcome, said a new poll it conducted for the Mail on Sunday newspaper showed support for Labour now 6 percentage points ahead of the Conservatives.

"One of them is country, one of the others is LGBTI rights", she told the BBC.

After running such a personalised - even presidential - campaign and having watched her authority drain away in recent days and hours, the future looks bleak.

May had repeatedly ruled out the need for a new election before changing her mind. Firstly, Sinn Féin do not take their seats at Westminster and therefore alter the arithmetic for the government to win a majority (from 326 to 322).

The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy. Johnson dropped out of the last year's leadership race during the chaos that followed the Brexit referendum.

"The president invited the Prime Minister to visit France at the earliest possible opportunity, and they agreed that the strong friendship between our two countries was important and would endure".

"As we're the party that won the most seats and most votes we are the only party in a position to form a government", Mrs May said.

This would complicate European Union negotiations.

There were also misgivings about relying on the DUP, which strongly opposes same-sex marriage and abortion.
