Bill Cosby's Court Case Mistrial: Full Story & Must-See Details

18 June 2017, 04:54 | Grady King

Judge Steven O'Neill, of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, declared a mistrial at 10:17 a.m., following a note from jurors saying that they were hopelessly deadlocked on three counts of aggravated sexual assault.

"If the parties previously agreed to stay the civil litigation pending the criminal trial, it is likely that they will continue that stipulation for a retrial", said Priya Sopori, a partner at Greenberg Glusker.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said they'd retry the case. The defense tried to block the deposition from trial, but since there was no written agreement in 2005 with then D.A. Bruce Castor not to charge Cosby, he agreed to the deposition. For instance, it's quite unusual for a prosecutor to file sexual assault charges 12 years after a police investigation. The prosecution put forth thirteen accusers as potential witnesses but only one was permitted to testify: Kelly Johnson, whose story about a 1996 incident is strikingly similar to Constand's own.

The entertainer had no visible reaction in court.

Victoria Valentino, another accuser, said she, as well as others, were "devastated" because of the mistrial.

Valentino, Kirkpatrick and Allison all accuse Cosby of drugging and raping them.

Dunham's colleague, "Girls" director and filmmaker Richard Shepard, tweeted a photo of the New York Magazine cover featuring several of Cosby's accusers.

Bill Cosby's lawyer repeatedly demanded a mistrial in his sex assault trial as five days of deliberations on the fate of the man once known as America's Dad pushed into Father's Day weekend, but the judge said there was no precedent to shut down the jury's talks.

"How do I describe the district attorney?" Heinously and exploitevly ambitious. Prosecutors said Saturday they will seek a new trial.

Constand testified she had been given three pills and became "frozen" and "semi-unconscious" and described being sexually touched by Cosby in his Philadelphia mansion.

Cindra Ladd, one of the 13 who could not take the stand, issued a statement thanking Constand for "her leadership and courage". The 79-year-old comedian says the encounter was consensual.

He still faces a number of civil lawsuits alleging assault and defamation.

His popularity also made him an in-demand product endorser, and he appeared in commercials for Jell-O, Coca-Cola, Ford and others. Cosby broke barriers as the first black actor to star in a network show, "I Spy", in the 1960s and created the top-ranked "Cosby Show" two decades later, starring as kindly Dr. Cliff Huxtable.

Cosby's defence attorney Brian McMonagle proclaimed: "Justice is real". They may also be able to query jurors about the deliberations in hopes of learning something that may make their arguments more convincing.

The jury had been deliberating for more than 50 hours on whether to convict the fallen TV star, but could not agree whether he had drugged and molested the 44-year-old.

"All Americans accused of a crime are entitled to a trial by a jury of their peers".
