Scalise Still in Critical Condition, Improving After Second Surgery

18 June 2017, 06:02 | Grady King

Though the game pegs Republicans against Democrats, attendees and participating lawmakers showed unity in wake of the shooting.

The opposing sides are paying tribute to Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday.

He was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center Wednesday and is in critical condition recovering from surgery. Democrats were on a winning streak for several years before the Republicans won the last game in a squeaker, 8-7.

The two sat side by side, wearing Louisiana State University's purple colored gear in honor of Scalise's alma mater. Reps. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania and Joe Barton of Texas - team managers of the Democratic and Republican baseball teams, respectively - called for their fellow lawmakers to come together.

Huffman, a lanky former All-American volleyball player at UC Santa Barbara and USA Volleyball Team member, is playing third base and batting second for the Democrats.

Capitol Police officers in Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson later died from his wounds.

President Trump delivered a videotaped statement, saying, "we will not be intimidated. the game will go on".

A congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police officer responding to the shooting were the others struck by suspect James Hodgkinson, a man with a history of criminal run-ins who had regularly expressed strident criticism of President Trump, and who reportedly asked a pair of congressmen whether the group on the field was composed of Democrats or Republicans.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Five churches in the Alexandria area have held prayer vigils for the victims, said the Washington Post.

Almost 25,000 tickets were sold for the game and it was on track to raise more than $1 million, roughly double what it did past year, organizers said.

"I had no idea this was going to happen and I don't know what to say about it". The scoreboard announced final attendance Thursday was a new record: 24,959. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

"They win if we give in".

Support for Scalise was everywhere.

Scalise staffers wore blue "Team Scalise" shirts and waved a number of signs for their boss. "I think he was just sick", he said.

Fox News" Chad Pergram said that his "medical situation is "complicated' and that he would "need later surgeries for broken bones". But Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, criticized some Republicans who have blamed the shooting on vitriol from the political left. "That's the source of unity and more than ever we must embrace it".

In past years, the game has brought in more than $600,000.

The game has received support from other lawmakers, including Rep.

There may be fierce rivalry out on the pitch, but there are also a number of players who have become fierce friends. They tore apart the GOP starting pitcher, Mark Walker (R-N.C.) - tagging him for seven runs over four innings - and they added four more runs in the fifth inning, after Richmond tagged a Walker fastball over the left fielder's head and sent the starting pitcher out of the game. "We will go at it", he said. I know you all will be playing extra hard tonight for Steve.

This year, the charities that will benefit include the Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, as well as a fund for fallen Capitol Police officers.
