Representative Cedric Richmond wrote a letter to the Republican leadership outlining his concerns that security for lawmakers was not stringent enough, and is continuing to push for better security detail for lawmakers in the aftermath of the shooting. The bullet entered his left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding.

Rep. Scalise was shot during baseball practice with the GOP team early Wednesday morning after a man approached the field and opened fire.

Lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot multiple times and critically wounded, has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said Saturday.

The three words were delivered by President Donald Trump, who spoke to the record crowd of almost 25,000 spectators via video.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The FBI and Alexandria Police Department said in a joint statement Thursday that federal authorities had examined the rifle and handgun recovered from the scene and determined that Hodgkinson had bought them from licensed sellers. "We now have no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

Mr Trump visited the hospital late on Wednesday and said Mr Scalise was "in some trouble".

Scalise remained hospitalized as his teammates and colleagues took to the field. "But as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning, beyond anything that we would have thought". "We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country", he said. "That's the source of unity and more than ever we must embrace it".

Following the shooting, there have been calls to end incendiary rhetoric in politics. Whatever our political differences are, they can not strike at the thing we have in common - this republic. "How dare they say such a thing", Pelosi said.

She did not specify which comments by Republicans she objected to.
